As part of the core curriculum, this course examines the rise and development of civilization in the period before the Common Era, with special attention given to the role of religious beliefs and attitudes. It is designed to introduce students to the study of history and the historical study of religion. It explores the impact of religious and philosophical ideas on the development of society and cultural identity in two ancient civilizations—the Hebrew people and ancient Greece—and examines their interaction in the Hellenistic period just before the birth of Christ.
